Overview
Japan — the review first, the visa second.
The Japanese system reverses the usual logic: the Certificate of Eligibility (CoE), requested in Japan by your employer or school, is the substantive review. The visa application at the embassy is then just a quick formality — and among the cheapest in the world.

Nationalities — single procedure
Japan in 2026 is more selective: N2 Japanese required for some customer-facing jobs (April 2026), the entrepreneur visa tightened to ¥30M in capital (October 2025), language schools subject to a minimum A1 level. On the upside: a genuine digital nomad visa since 2024, a free Working Holiday (32 partner countries), and the HSP status that opens permanent residence in 3 years — or even 1.

How to enter?
Three access logics.
Depending on your profile, a different mechanism applies.
CoE sponsorship
Work visa, HSP, student, Business Manager: a sponsor in Japan (employer, school, your company) obtains the Certificate of Eligibility. The visa follows in 5–10 days for ¥3,000.
Points-based merit
The Highly Skilled Professional (70 points: age, degrees, salary, Japanese) enhances the work visa: 5-year status, family privileges, and permanent residence in 3 years — 1 year at 80+ points.
Temporary stays
Digital nomad (6 months, ¥10M in income) and Working Holiday (12 months, ages 18–30, free): Japanese interludes without a CoE — but with no path to residence either.
Good to know: Japan has no “retiree / no activity” visa, and since October 2025 the entrepreneur route (Business Manager) requires ¥30M (~€170,000) in capital along with five other cumulative conditions.
