Overview
Thailand — from the premium LTR to the nomad DTV.
Thailand has no single permit: it offers a range from the 10-year premium visa run by the Board of Investment (LTR) to Asia's most flexible nomad visa (DTV), via the classic routes with annual extensions — employment, studies, retirement. The choice of route and the mechanics of extensions make all the difference.

Three logics coexist. The LTR (10 years) is run by the Board of Investment with wealth or income criteria, and a decisive tax advantage: exemption from tax on remitted foreign income for three of its four categories — which matters since Thailand taxes that income beyond 180 days of presence per year. The DTV (5 years, 180-day entries) covers remote workers and freelancers with foreign clients, with no right to work locally. The classic routes (Non-B employment, Non-ED studies, Non-O retirement) work through annual extensions at immigration, with address reporting every 90 days and a re-entry permit before any trip.

LTR
LTR — Long-Term Resident Visa (10 years)

BOI10 years

Wealthy Global Citizen
USD 1M in assets, including 500,000 in Thailand
Pensioner / WFTP
USD 80,000/year (reductions possible)
Fees
THB 50,000 for 10 years
Taxes
Exemption on remitted foreign income (3 of 4 categories) · 17% HSP
Reformed in February 2025: the Wealthy Global Citizen income threshold was abolished — much online content is out of date. For remote workers, the decisive filter is the employer: 3 years in existence and USD 50M in revenue.
DTV
DTV — Destination Thailand Visa
Nomads and freelancers · 5 years multi-entry
NomadTHB 10,000

180 days per entry + 1 extension (THB 1,900)
Fees
THB 10,000 (e-visa)
Filing
From abroad only
Not a work permit: any Thai employment is prohibited. Tightened rule: the funds must be seasoned over 3 months — a last-minute transfer no longer passes. Beyond 180 days/year: tax residence, without the LTR exemption.
Non-B
Non-B visa + work permit
Local employment · two-step sequence

Stay
90 days, then annual extension (THB 1,900)
The visa alone does not allow employment: the work permit, obtained after arrival, is a separate document. Starting early exposes you — and the employer — to real penalties.
ED
Non-ED visa — Studies

Post-study
No dedicated scheme
Long misused, the Non-ED is now monitored: attendance is checked at renewal. And there is no post-study visa: at the end of the program, you need a job offer (Non-B), a remote activity (DTV), or you leave.
Non-O
Non-O Retirement (annual extension)
From 50 · THB 800,000 or THB 65,000/month

Income option
THB 65,000/month, exchange-rate margin advised
Age

Duration
1 year, renewable without limit
Two retirement visas coexist: the Non-O (in-country, no mandatory insurance) and the O-A (from abroad, THB 400,000 insurance, criminal record, and medical certificate required). Everyone confuses them — the choice changes the whole application.
PRIV
Thailand Privilege (residence by membership)

Membership
From THB 650,000 (5 years) to THB 5M (20 years)
Requirements
None — no income, assets, or age requirement
Stay
1 year per entry, renewable
Work
Not allowed · no tax exemption
Before paying, compare: a retiree eligible for the Non-O, a remote worker covered by the DTV, or USD 1M in wealth covered by the LTR get the same thing for less — the LTR with the tax exemption on top. The Privilege makes sense for those who tick none of these boxes.
This list presents the main residence permits, which cover the vast majority of relocation situations. It is not exhaustive: other specific visas exist for particular situations, available from the country's official authorities.
